For Community Members and Supporters,
We are pleased to provide an update on the ongoing work and future plans of the Primrose Community Nature Trust. As guardians of the Primrose Community Nature Reserve, a 16-acre site steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance, we remain committed to preserving and enhancing this valuable local resource. Below, we outline our recent activities, current projects, and long-term goals for the reserve.
Mission and Objectives
Since its incorporation and subsequent charitable status in March 2019, the Primrose Community Nature Trust (PCNT) has been dedicated to three primary objectives:
1. Conservation and Rehabilitation: Our foremost priority is to conserve and rehabilitate Primrose Lodge and its surrounding environment. This involves ongoing efforts to protect the natural habitat and improve the site for both ecological health and public enjoyment.
2. Educational Outreach: We aim to advance public understanding of the lodge’s ecological significance, focusing on its fauna, flora, biodiversity, and river catchment management. This includes educational programs for schools, local organisations, and the general public.
3. Public Access and Enjoyment: Enhancing public access to the reserve is vital. We are committed to promoting the site as an accessible public open space, ensuring that everyone in the community can benefit from the tranquility and educational opportunities it offers.
Partnership with Ribble Rivers Trust
We are excited to announce a formal agreement with the Ribble Rivers Trust (RRT), which will oversee the ongoing maintenance of the reserve. This partnership grants us access to RRT’s extensive expertise and logistical support, ensuring that the reserve is managed to the highest standards. Volunteer efforts, such as litter-picking and invasive species control, will now be coordinated by RRT, streamlining these essential activities.
Ensuring Safety and Compliance
A critical current project involves securing a section of boundary fencing, necessary for both safety and insurance purposes. With RRT’s assistance, we are addressing this requirement to maintain the reserve’s safety standards for all visitors.
Planning for Future Development
To advance our long-term goals, we are seeking funding to conduct essential scoping work for future projects. This preliminary planning is crucial; without it, our ability to secure grants for larger initiatives will be significantly hindered. The estimated cost of this scoping work is £7,500, a necessary investment for the continued development of the reserve. We are hoping that RVBC will support this application.
Refurbishment of the Sluice System
Among our planned projects, the refurbishment of the old sluice system stands out as both a practical and educational enhancement. Historically, these sluices controlled the flow of Mearley Brook through the lodge. Restoring their functionality would facilitate maintenance tasks and provide an educational exhibit, demonstrating the site’s industrial past and its role in the local water management system.
Pathway to Greenacre Street
We are also exploring the creation of a new pathway linking the reserve to Greenacre Street, opposite Holmes Mill. This pathway would provide a direct route to the reserve from the town centre, enhancing accessibility and encouraging more frequent use by residents. Discussions with St James Primary School have been positive, and we are working to formalise agreements and plan for necessary security measures.
Proposed Circular Walk
A more ambitious, long-term project involves the creation of a circular walk around the lodge’s main pond area. This would significantly expand the accessible areas of the reserve, including potential access to the dam’s upper section. The estimated cost is substantial for this project with the primary expense being the construction of a bridge over the dam’s overflow. While this is a major undertaking, it aligns with our vision of making the reserve a more engaging and versatile space for the community.
Volunteer Engagement and Funding Needs
As we look ahead, the success of our initiatives will rely heavily on community support, both in terms of volunteer involvement and fundraising. We encourage all who are interested in the future of the Primrose Community Nature Reserve to participate in upcoming volunteer sessions or consider making a donation. Every contribution, whether of time or resources, is invaluable to our efforts.
Conclusion
The Primrose Community Nature Trust remains deeply committed to its mission of preserving and enhancing the Primrose Community Nature Reserve. With your continued support, we are confident that we can achieve our goals and ensure that this vital green space remains a cherished part of Clitheroe for generations to come.
Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement with our work. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress and look forward to your participation in these exciting projects.
